Sundance Films 2009

Thank goodness for my daughter, Shalyse, for waiting in lines DAILY for tickets to Sundance films. My daughters have made the Sundance films a hobby in recent years. I think they see 20-25 films each season. This reason, alone, is why Shalyse should be blogging...but that's a different story. She can give you detail about film categories, point out films that will probably make it to theater, advise you on the best locations to see the films, advise you about how to get tickets when you're on a wait list, etc, etc.

Me, I just like to catch a few interesting or comical films each year and preferably in Salt Lake City. And I DON'T particularly care for the documentaries. Some of the films, my daughters have seen are BAZAAR! But that's another blog post. Many of the films we've watched appear on Showtime (many moons later).

So, here's the films I got to see with her this year:

Black Dynamite
Michael Jai WHite stars as a title vigilante, an Afro-sporting, shamelessly womanizing kung fu mster who is investigating the death of his brother and discovers a nefarious plot involving the distribution of "Anaconda Malt Liquor" in Los Angeles. The film is a spoof of Shaft, Dolemite, and just about every other blaxploitation film from the 1970's.

Motherhood
This film is a funny and poignant comedy about one woman's quest to hold on to her true self as she embraces the heartache and joys of being a mother. Eliza Welch (Uma Thurman) is having a really bad day. A middle-aged mom in post-9/11 Manhattan with two kids, an oblivious husband, and an incontinent dog, Eliza is a consummate multitasker facing the soul-crushing fear that her dreams of being a writer are going down the diaper bin. Motherhood takes place in a single day--a day when Eliza becomes a magnet for the entire city's hostility.

Motherhood is likely to make it to the theatre in a couple of years.

Thanks Shalyse for helping me get to the films this year!

  1. Ohhhh Yvette I have been dying to go to the Sundance!!! If I am ever in UT during that time Please promise me you will go with me...I am a movie junkie and not that many people are willing to go LOL...So I will def need a partner...Yea I totally agree that Uma movie is most likely to go the movie theater, while the other ummm not so likely, especially when its a remake of some many 70's movies as you said lol...They have something similar here but again NO one to go with LOL (My boyfriend hates the movies, hence no movie nights) but I promised myself this year that If I want to go to the movies I will just go by myself LOL (I know I sound like a total loser LOL) but my friend actually said that its the best..No one talking to you or forcing you to see something you don't want to LOL...so I'm give it a try..I'll let you know how it works out! LOL
